Panagbenga 2009 : Moriones Came To Town

Rarely would you see two famous Philippine festivals in one. So when Moriones Festival of Marinduque showed-up in this year's Baguio Panagbenga Festival, the spectators got a double treat. Moriones presence in the Summer Capital is aimed to promote Marinduque as the Lenten Capital of the Philippines.

Fearsome Roman Soldier

Moriones is Famous for Angry Masks and Colorful Costumes

Longinus and the Famous Bad Eye

Another Gruesome Face

Centurions Playing With the Crowd

Kapatiran and Mistah Morions on Float

The Moriones Float

I got this interesting article about Moriones Festival here. Legend has it that the blood which flowed from Christ’s body landed in Longinus’ bad eye, curing him of blindness. This miracle caused him to convert to Christianity and he was consequently hunted by his fellow centurions. This part of the story is dramatically retold by costumed participants, the Romans wearing huge painted masks depicting fearsome faces. The performances take place in various locations throughout the island of Marinduque.

  1. Moriones is one festival i've been wanting to go to. I hope i would be able to go this year. Amazing masks and costumes! The story of Longinus and the Wandering Jew legends have always been interesting. There was a movie in the 80's called The Seventh Sign, one of the main protagonists was a Roman centurion who hit Jesus before his death and was condemned to wander the earth until judgment day.:D
