Foodstagram Friday : Halo-Halo

Marinduque's version of Halo-halo
Halo-Halo is a famous Filipino dessert that is also a refreshment. It is a best-selling Filipino food/dessert/refreshment during the summer season. Halo halo recipe is a mixture of sweetened preserved fruits, evaporated milk and crushed ice top with either ice cream, leche flan or ube.

Traditionally, the ingredients or "halo" are at the bottom part of a tall, clear glasses to show its colorful preserved fruit contents or mixtures. The glass then is filled with shaved ice poured-in with milk and topped with leche flan among others.

Ingredients vary from each places but usually include some or all of the following: Sweetened saba banana, sweetened kamote,  sweetened jackfruit or langka, kaong, sago, green and red gulaman, pinipig, buko strips or macapuno, sweetened mongo beans, ube halaya, and leche flan all mixed in  milk, sugar and shaved ice.

Here are some interesting facts about this delectable treat:

1. Halo-Halo in Sagada has cooked macarani as an ingredient.

2. Razon's Halo-Halo has the finest shaved ice and only has three main ingridients: Sweetened Saba, Macapuno at Leche Flan.

3. A Halo-halo I tasted in Tiwi, Albay has a cheese on top while some Halo-Halo there has coconut milk in it.

  1. You know something is foreign to you if you have to look up half of the ingredients. :) But I don't shy away from it. Am I correct when assuming that this is a form of fruit salad?

    1. It has different ingredients with that of fruit salad but it can also be considered one. Their main difference is that Halo-halo has shaved ice while fruit salads usually have creams.

    2. Oh yeah, that's it. The other one has corn kernels (mais con yelo) while the other one has gulaman and sago. We just mixed them altogether kasi.
